ELECTRIC POWER IN POMPTON LAKES
|
The first electric power in Pompton Lakes was furnished by a small municipally owned generator in the building that now houses our First Aid Squad. In early 1918 the Borough purchased the water rights to Pompton Lakes from Edwin Corning. In June 1918 an ordinance was passed for the Borough to construct a hydroelectric generating plant on Hamburg Turnpike at the Dam on the site of the present North Jersey District Water Supply Commission Pumping Station. Construction of the new plant was completed in 1919. The Borough operated the plant until December 19,1930 at which time it was sold to the Jersey Central Power and Light Company. Jersey Central operated the plant until 1939. The plant was later demolished for the construction of the Pumping Station. The picture below shows part of the ceremonies at the transfer of ownership from the Borough to Jersey Central. |
