CONVEYANCE TO ARENT SCHUYLER

This conveyance took place in 1694 when Arent Schuyler purchased land from the Indians. The following is a description of the land conveyance from the Indians to Arent Schuyler.

"All that certain piece, tract or parcel of land lying and being on both sides of the Poquaneck Creek. Beginning at the mouth of a small creek in the English language called Sinkank which said small creek is a branch that falls into Poquaneck Creeke and lays opposite the great hill called by the Indians Mulonagkas extending from the said mouth of Sinkiank Creeke Northward along the said small Creeke, as farr until it meets with the Indian Path that gowes toward Pompton Creeke and then running again Northward along the East side of said Creeke, taking in a stroke of land in said Eastside till it meets with the Falls in the Indian language called Arraign and from said Fall Westward, comprehending all the lowlands there to the hill called by the Indians Hackneckonck and then southward along the foot of said hills to the great great Hill by the Indians called 'Suupeck' Eastward down the same Creeke till it comes to the first station called the mouth of Sinkank Creeke before mentioned, as more plainly may appear by the Mapp or Card made by the descriptions of the said natives Deed, and may more fully and at large appear; together with all the meadows, woodlands etc.

The grantors of the above tract were " Tapgan, Dranap, Manmin, Wickwaw, Wawegin, Duayeponek, Neskeglawitt, of Toquanick, Pompton and larapagh-Sachem of Minising for themselves-as being empowered by Pegween' the wife of Great Claes and Keshogannak."

The historic Schuyler-Colfax House, 2343 Hamburg Turnpike, Wayne, is a reminder of the influence which the Dutch settlers had on the North Jersey area. This photo was taken in April 1960.
