WKER began broadcasting in October of 1964 on 1500 AM. The station featured a variety of popular music as well as local and national news. The station was owned by Bob Kerr, until he passed away in 1982. The ownership passed to longtime employees Lee Novak and Tom Niven. The station was sold to Mariana Broadcasting, Inc., in July 1993. The call letters were changed to WGHT in August 1993. Both Tom Niven and Lee Novak continued to work for the station; however, Lee Novak passed away earlier this year (1995). WGHT plays hits from the 50's, 60's and 70's, as well as some additional music from more recent years. WGHT has also beefed up coverage of local news and events, and is considered the "voice of Pompton Lakes." The studios and transmitter are located at the south end of Lincoln Avenue.
DID YOU KNOW? The old Headquarters for the Fire Department was at 300 Wanaque Avenue. It was deemed too small to house the new equipment and was moved to the new Raymond Cahill Memorial Fire House on Passaic Avenue. At the old location is now Riddles Restaurant. The basement of the old headquarters was once the stable for the horse that drew the apparatus. Dobbin, the horse, did double duty by pulling the wagon used for trash collection. |
