POMPTON LAKES PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The first school in Pompton Lakes was the Union Academy on Ringwood Avenue. In 1890 the building was declared unsafe and it was condemned. The next school was established at Durling Hall on Wanaque Avenue until fire destroyed that building in 1894. Later classes were taught at home, although a few classes met at the Colfax home on Hamburg Turnpike.
The next school was built in the late 1890's on Lenox Avenue on property bought from John J. Bartholf for $1.00.
The current Lenox School, serving children in grades Kindergarten to 8, was built in 1918 on adjacent land, and the old school building was converted to the Borough Hall until it was torn down to be replaced by the present Borough Hall in the 1970's.
Pompton Lakes High School students traveled to Paterson for classes until Butler High School was built in the early 1900's. They attended classes in Butler until the present Pompton Lakes High School was built in 1932.
The High School students of Wayne, Midland Park and Oakland also attended Pompton Lakes High School between 1932 and the middle 50's at which time those towns had built their own High Schools or had joined a regional system.
The High School students of Riverdale are presently also attending Pompton Lakes High School.
Lincoln School, the second Elementary School, for grades Kindergarten through 6th, was built in 1956.
The Lakeside Middle School, for grades 7 to 9, was built in 1968.
