A vote was also taken to install a Vo Tech School but it was voted down. Bus stops and stations were installed, as well as a sanitary sewage plant. In 1962 the shooting of bows and arrows was prohibited in town and on August 2, 1964 Fire Prevention Codes were established requiring businesses and other buildings to meet a certain safety code. In 1965 a Fireman's Pension Plan was made to go to the widows and children of any firelighter and on October 1, 1965 a contract with the Tele Mark Communications Inc. was made to operate and maintain a community TV system. The next Mayor was Jack Sterling who took office in 1966. It was during his term that the Police dispatcher's job was created in 1966, and Lakeside School was built in 1968. Also a major advancement for women took place making women the Police phone operators. In 1969 the office of Borough Clerk was established. During Sterling's term, as well as during the terms of the other mayors of the 50's and 60's, the requirement of licenses and permits for stores, buildings, and business was made mandatory.
In 1976 Jon P. Spinnanger was elected Mayor as a Republican lasting till 1983. There were big money problems at this time and the residents wanted a Town Manager to replace the Mayor and Council. After the Council voted there was a 3 to 3 split. Spinnanger was the one who voted it down. A new Fire House was built and action was taken to begin cleaning up the rivers. A volunteer recycling program was begun and the senior housing development was built. In 1984 Charles C. Romain took office for a three-year term. Coincidentally, just as his great grandfather was Mayor during the 1903 flood, Charles C. Romain was mayor for the 1984 flood. In 1985 the swimming program at Hershfield ended and in 1987 a tunnel flood control plan was proposed. It was also proposed that the reservoir be lowered. The Twin Lakes were dredged and the town also leased some land from Dupont to create the Dupont field.
John J. Sinsimer took office in 1988. During his term the parks began to get cleaned up and Dupont started its clean up job of all the land and houses that were contaminated by the company's chemicals. Also the red caboose from 1948 came to live in Pompton Lakes forever. Another project proposed was to build a new gymnasium and cafeteria in the High School but it was voted down. After three years passed a new Mayor took office in 1992 and he still resides as Mayor today, and that is Mayor John E. Murrin. As Mayor he has done many things. A job was created to watch out for our rivers and parks which is held by Ed Merrill and the Mayor's Economic Advisory Committee was developed for the concerned citizens and business owners so that they can come together to try to increase the economy of the town. Also the Mayor and Council fought and won not to have Ringwood Avenue widened as the county had wanted. Finally the "Pulse of the People" was created which enables citizens on the first Monday of every month from 7-8 a.m. and 7-8 p.m. to meet with the Mayor and discuss issues that they would rather not talk about at the public meetings in front of a large number of people. We have been very fortunate as a community to have such fine leaders. It is only our hope that as time progresses the town will continue to be blessed with caring people who will govern the town with and for the people so that it can continue to grow. The Junior Mayor and Council would like to congratulate the Pompton Lakes community on their 100th year anniversary.
