HENRY G. HERSHFIELD

Mr. Hershfield was born in 1876 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Louis Harris Hershfield, one of the pioneers of Montana. His grandfather was an early settler of Kansas.

He was educated in the public schools of Helena, Montana, and Columbia University in New York City, taking academic and legal courses. He volunteered to serve in The Spanish American War and was detailed for duty on the Indian Reservations.

In 1909 he was elected Mayor of Pompton Lakes and served four consecutive terms, the nominee of both parties. He organized the Pompton Lakes Building and Loan Association and was in the Real Estate business. In 1917 he was elected member of the New Jersey Assembly and was returned for eight consecutive terms.

In his long service, Mr. Hershfield was the author of many laws to help the ordinary citizen, especially in housing, workman's compensation, injury compensation and industrial diseases subject to compensation under the Workman's Compensation Act.

Hershfield Park was named in his honor in 1938.
