QUARANTINE The Pompton Lakes Ledger, September 17, 1931 There was a Proclamation Quarantine, owing to the threatened epidemic of Infantile Paralysis issued by the Board of Health of Pompton Lakes on September 18, 1931: All children under the age of sixteen are forbidden to leave the confines of their homes. All minors, (persons under twenty-one years of age) are forbidden to attend public or private gatherings. This provision applies to schools, churches, theatres, ball parks, bathing resorts, and all other places. Violators of this Quarantine will be subject to a fine of $100.00 This Quarantine will remain in effect until publicly revoked by the Board of Health of the Borough of Pompton Lakes. To everyone's relief and gratitude, Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Albert Sabin developed vaccines to prevent Infantile Paralysis. The Vaccines developed by Dr. Salk and Dr. Sabin from 1955-1961, practically wiped out the disease. Jonas Salk died on Saturday, June 24,1995 at Green Hospital in Lajolla, California of heart failure. He was 80. The Salk vaccine was a turning point in the fight against a crippling illness and death that brought dread to millions of people fearful of the yearly epidemics. In 1961, the vaccine began to be given orally in the United States.
