St. MARY'S SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB
St. Mary's Senior Citizen Club of Pompton Lakes was organized October 1978 by Carmela Straw, who discussed forming the club with Father John. He gave the new organization permission to use the church hall and kitchen facilities. Volunteer officers who served until a formal election was held included: Carmela Straw, President; George Petty, 1st Vice President; Jean Bryk, 2nd Vice President; Mary Ackennan, Secretary; and Frances Pezour, Treasurer.
On June 13, 1979, the first formal election was held. Newly elected officers were:
Frances Pezour, President; Lil Migliardi, 1st Vice President; Kathleen Pinand, 2nd Vice President; Mac D'Ambrosio, Secretary; Catherine Scully, Treasurer, Anthony Motisi, Sergeant-at-Arms.
Following the election, two of the social events of the summer were a bus ride June 28, 1979 to Smithsville and one to Seaside Heights, July 24, 1979.
The St. Mary's Senior Citizen Club is open to all Pompton Lakes residents of all faiths who have reached the age of 55 years and older. There is a nominal initiation fee for new members; each member also pays annual dues and is expected to purchase a name badge which is to be worn at all meetings.
It offers members through attendance at meetings an opportunity to renew
acquaintances and to make new friends. The organization is devoted to the
interests and welfare of seniors. Legislative information, recreation and social
activities are made available.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Bell in St. Mary's Steeple was donated by Mrs. Henry G. Hershfield and her sister Mrs. McDavitt in memory of their brother, Alfred Lauterback, who was killed in an accident.
The same bell continues to ring out today; however, today, it is electronically operated.
