GIRL SCOUTS
The Pompton Lakes/Riverdale Service Unit of the Lenni-Lenape Girl Scout Council has been active in the community since at least 1958. Then the Pompton Lakes District was part of the Paterson Area Association.
The purpose of girl scouting is to give girls the opportunity to increase their self confidence, make new friends, and get involved in the community. From the start, the girl scouts have helped church nurseries, the adult school, and Borough Hall. The various troops helped charities by making dolls, collecting for UNICEF, and sold cookies to support council programs. Throughout the years these activities have been continued and enhanced. The girl scout troops helped maintain Lakeside Park for a number of years and they collected food for the needy.
A current project in 1995 is "Baby Bundles". This new service project had the girl scouts coordinate with Borough Hall, other associations, businesses, and schools, the collection of baby items for local families who need a helping hand.
Many residents of Pompton Lakes have been involved in the girl scouts at one time or another, and this tradition will continue. These people are all active citizens of Pompton Lakes and they help keep our town a place people want to live in and visit.
